Historical city

Lamego is an ancient Portuguese city located in the north in the district of Viseu, a Douro sub-region. With a population of 12,200 inhabitants, it is the district’s second largest city and home to the municipal headquarters of the county with the same name.

The county of Lamego occupies an area of 165.42 km2 and has a population of 26,691 inhabitants, spanning 18 parishes.

The city of Lamego is 35 km from Pinhão; approximately 45 minutes by car.

The city of Lamego is of historic and monumental importance due to its large number of monuments, churches and houses emblazoned with coats of arms, whilst also being a Portuguese diocese.

Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios

The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Our Lady of Remedies) is located in the parish of Sé, within the city of Lamego. Located at the top of Santo Estevão hill, it forms an integral part of the city’s panorama, to which it is connected by a stunning stairwell.

This monument, including its staircase and park, was classified as a World Heritage protected monument in 1984.

Sé Cathedral of Lamego

The Sé Cathedral of Lamego, built in 1129, is located in the historic city centre.

It is a gothic cathedral that draws from architectural styles from various eras, giving the visitor a sense of both beauty and grandeur.

Castle of Lamego

The Castle of Lamego, classified as a National Monument since 1910, is located in the parish of Almacave, in the city and county of Lamego.

Today, its walls make up the city’s urban mesh. From there, one can appreciate stunning views over the rivers Coura, Balsemão and Varosa.
