Pinhão

UNESCO World Heritage

The town of Pinhão is located in the demarcated wine region of the Douro and is bordered by the River Douro and River Pinhão on each side.

It has become an important commercial hub, particularly for the transport of Port wine, initially carried down to Vila Nova de Gaia in the traditional Rabelo boats, and later transported in carriages on the Douro Valley railway line and latterly in cistern trucks. This brought rapid development to the area and Pinhão is now considered to be the economic and geographical centre of the demarcated Port wine region.
